2011 Richard Howell

Woods: Indian rosewood and figured western red cedar. The cedar has more character and tighter grain than any set seen to date.  Honduran mahogany neck. French polish throughout.

Miscellany: 650mm scale, 53mm nut, 43mm string spacing at nut, 59mm at saddle. Very ornate rosette. HIscox case.

Condition: as new. One slight string ding below bridge at bass e string. Very minor wear in shellac on back in upper bout. Normal string height with ample saddle for future adjustment.

Comment: Richard Howell is perhaps the best respected traditional builder in Australia, and physical issues may cause his output to slow or stop. This is a comfortable, rather light guitar with quick response and warm, creamy trebles and mids. It has been the everyday guitar for a professor/performer since new. Two things are evident: this guitar has been babied in terms of handling, as one would have expected wear. Second, it has been played vigorously because it is open and fulsome in its voice.  I admire the ample power it possesses but I am convinced by the sensitivity and clarity it offers. A sophisticated instrument that makes Bach among other composers sound quite wonderful–harmonies, arpeggios, trebles in the high reaches are all superior.

This is a great, great guitar for lovers of traditionally built instruments, made affordable by its used status.
